The challenge

Important information existed. The experience connecting it did not.

Northfield’s fictional legacy site reflected common municipal problems: navigation based on departments, disconnected agenda packets, buried meeting dates, inconsistent permit pages, and no clear path for urgent updates.

The redesign reframes the website as a collection of resident services. A utility payment, zoning permit, council agenda, road notice, and parks registration each receive a clear owner, content model, and completion path.

Design decisions

Six decisions shape the whole concept.

01

Task-first entry points

Popular actions appear before organizational detail, reducing the number of choices required to begin.

02

Structured meetings

Dates, bodies, locations, agendas, packets, minutes, and recordings follow one predictable model.

03

Visible public notices

Urgent and time-sensitive information has a consistent location, hierarchy, and expiration workflow.

04

Plain-language content

Headings, summaries, instructions, requirements, and contact options answer resident questions directly.

05

Accessible interaction

Semantic structure, visible focus, keyboard operation, contrast, touch targets, and zoom tolerance are foundational.

06

Reusable publishing

Staff work from defined content types and templates instead of rebuilding layouts page by page.

System inventory

The homepage is only one piece.

The concept connects 15 recurring page and content types so residents do not have to learn a different layout in every department.

Intended outcomes

What the concept is meant to improve.

Fewerdead ends and unnecessary calls
Fasterpaths to high-demand services
Clearerownership and publishing workflows
Strongeraccessibility and public trust
